Called vs Sent

Pastor Robert Morris, of Gateway Church Southlake, TX., recently shared a teaching on the concept of being called vs. being sent. It is a relevant word for disciples of Jesus today - and especially those who feel the Lord is directing them into specific ministry assignments. In this scripture we find a post-resurrection Jesus saying the following to his disciples: John 20:21 Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."

We know that Jesus had a commandment for the disciples before they began their ministry - that being to wait for the power from on high that they would receive from the Father as He bestowed the gift of the Holy Spirit. And we know they were obedient from the narrative of Acts chapter two. Relevant to our discussion here is the observation that three years had elapsed from the time Jesus called the disciples until the time Jesus sent his disciples.

Several important things emerge as we examine the concept of the call vs. the send. First, the time period between the two events is important as a time of ministry and training for the one who has been called waiting for their sending. The disciples were certainly being trained in the three years they spent with Jesus - learning and growing. However, it was also a time of ministry for them as the ministered under the direction of Jesus.

A second important aspect to note is that by being obedient to the command of Jesus and waiting for the timing of God's sending - the disciples went forward with a divine purpose and anointing. With that combination - the followers of Jesus were able to change the world - everywhere they went they communicated to others how Jesus had changed their lives.

Are you like the disciples were? In a period in your life between God's calling and His sending? If you are - be patient. Be content in the place you are now and do all you know to do to prepare yourself for the sending. For some, this period may include further training and education - and for those CFM Bible College stands ready to help you prepare for your sending.
